Moving can be very expensive, so we've compiled a list of 10 ways to save money on your move.

 1. Plan Ahead

Create a comprehensive moving budget ahead of time that includes moving company fees, insurance premiums, mileage and gas, pet care, etc.  Planning ahead ensures you will have enough time and patience while comparing costs and bargain shopping.

2. Consider Shipping!

You may be surprised at the money you can save by shipping items through Greyhound Busses or the USPS.  Obviously, for some items this will not be a cost effective solution, however consider shipping your old books through the USPS Flat Rate Boxes.  Greyhound Busses is also a great option for shipping larger items, however you will have to pick up the item(s) at the nearest Bus Station, as they will not deliver it to your home.

3. Organize Before you Pack

When you take the time to do some Spring Cleaning before you move, you will find that you are able to get rid of a lot of stuff that you have accumulated.  Organize your belongings as thoroughly as possible, and you will notice that you may have a lot of duplicate items, or a lot of items that you don't use regularly.  Consider purging those items to save space and money on your move.

4. Envision Your Furniture in Your New Home

When you plan what furniture you are going to need in your new home, you may find that you don't have room for all of your furniture.  For example, if your current living room has room for a couch and a loveseat, but your new home only has room for a couch and a recliner, consider selling your loveseat before you move.  That way, you won't spend money on moving the extra furniture, and you have money left over to buy some new furniture when you get to your new home!

Also, be sure to measure doorways and make sure that your furniture will make it into your new home!

5. Get Creative on Packing Supplies

Packing supplies, like bubble wrap, are very expensive.  Instead of buying packing supplies, consider using your towels, sheets, and clothes to protect your fragile items while moving.

6. Never Pay for Boxes

Instead of purchasing boxes, visit your local recycling center and pick up used boxes.  Other places to consider asking for boxes: hospitals, shoe stores, warehouse stores like Costco, and restaurants.

7. Check Craigslist

Oftentimes, people who have just moved, will list their moving supplies on Craigslist.  Check it out and see if you can get some free supplies there!

8. Keep a Paper Trail

Keep receipts and a detailed log of your moving expenses, because they may be tax deductible!  Contact your local CPA to find out if your move is eligible.

9. Consider a Pod

Instead of hiring movers, consider using a Pod service like Coronado Mobile Storage, who drop off a shipping container a few days before you move.  Once you have loaded the container, they will deliver it to your new home so that you can unload it.  Once you're all moved in, they will come and remove the pod.  This is a much less expensive option than paying for movers.

10. Disassemble large items

If you disassemble tables, chairs, and other items that can be easily disassembled, you will save space in your moving van, and therefore save money!
