2012 Coronado Concert in the Park Schedule

May 10th, 2012 • By: Kgillingham Blog, Things to do

The Summer Concert in the Park series is held in Spreckel’s Park and is one of Coronado Locals’ favorite past times.  Families get together for picnic style dinners and listen to the bands play while catching up with each other.  Kids get to run around in the playground and dance along side their families in front of the gazebo where the bands play.

The concerts are held every Sunday from 6:00-7:30, with few exceptions, which are noted below.  Oftentimes, people stay far after the end of the band’s set.  Additionally, be sure to get there early if you don’t have a regular spot where you sit.  Otherwise you may find yourself scrambling for an area to sit down your picnic items.

The city does allow alcohol consumption in the park during the concerts only but the alcohol cannot be in glass containers.  Additionally, no dogs are permitted in the park and that is strictly enforced.  If you want to bring your dog, be sure to keep them on the sidewalk.
Admission to the concerts are free and the cost for holding the concerts is paid for by sponsors and donations.  For information on how to donate to the concert in the park series, contact Kate Gillingham and she will put you into contact with the concert director.

The Concert Schedule is as follows:

  • May 27 – Coronado Community Concert Band
  • June 3 – The Lonesome Georges

Dave’s Favorite Weekend: Motorcars on Main Street this weekend!

April 20th, 2012 • By: Kgillingham Blog, Things to do

The festivities continue this weekend!  Once you have checked out the Coronado Flower Show and Coronado Friends of Library Book Fair on Saturday and Sunday, head down to the Motorcars on Main Street on Sunday!  This is Dave‘s favorite weekend in Coronado, aside from the 4th of July celebrations.  The classic cars line up on Isabella and there’s fun music, great food, and awesome cars.  The event brings out most locals and even brings a large crowd from over the bridge!  Motorcars is free to the public and is a great way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon.

Be sure to look for Dave’s 1972 Yellow VW Panel Van.  He will be at the event with Kate’s dog, Ben.

For more information on the event, contact Dave by email at dave@coronado-realty.com or call his cell at (619) 992-5318.

Coronado Book Fair: April 21-22, 2012

April 20th, 2012 • By: Kgillingham Blog, Things to do

Every year, Coronado Friends of the Library hold their annual book fair the same weekend as the Coronado Flower Show, Motorcars on Main Street, and the Art in the Park weekend.  According to the Coronado Friends of the Library website, each year the Book Fair offers 60,000 “books… CDs, DVDs, Children’s books and adult fiction…Nonfiction-cookbooks, garden & home, crafts, biography, military, nature, religion, self-help, computing, business, references, text and test prep.”

In order to pull the event together, locals donate books to the library throughout the year, and over 120 volunteers organize the books, store them throughout the year, and prepare for the fair.  According to Friends President Joan Sadorf as quoted in David Axelson’s article “Coronado Friends of the Library Presents their Annual Book Fair” every year the book donations are so large that they have to be stored at NAS North Island throughout the year and trucked over to Spreckels Park Friday morning before the fair.  According to Sadorf,

“The Navy Seabees get us the big trucks every year and without them, we would be sunk.  We also use some volunteers from the Naval Special Warfare Command.  After the vent during tear-down, we have a Navy helicopter squadron and the NJROTC group from Coronado High School.  For the big setup and tear-down, we rely heavily on the Navy.”

The money raised at the Book Fair goes directly to fund the library.  Sadorf said they net between $25,000-$20,000 each year.

If you want a sneak peak at the Book Fair, show up today and purchase a Friend of the Library membership for $5 (seniors and students) or $10 for everyone else.

The hours for the Book Fair are:

  • Friday, April 20 (members only) from 1pm-6pm
  • Saturday, April 21 from 9am-5pm
  • Sunday, April 22 from 9am-5pm

Don’t forget to bring cash or check to purchase to books!  Hope to see you there!

This Weekend! 87th Annual Coronado Flower Show

April 20th, 2012 • By: Kgillingham Blog, Things to do

The 87th Annual Coronado Flower show held in Spreckels Park this Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22.  This year’s theme is “A Floral Olympiad.”  As the largest tented flower show in the nation, the Coronado Flower Show is one of Coronado’s biggest annual events.  In addition to home front judging of all the homes in the Village, the Flower Show features “landscape displays, horticultural and floral competitions, lectures, food, beer and wine events, live entertainment, demonstrations and shopping.”  According to the Coronado Flower Show website, the goal of the flower show is to:

  • To educate the viewing public and garden club members.
  • To stimulate interest in horticulture and floral design.
  • To provide an outlet for creative expression.
  • To convey to the community objectives of the NGC.

I’ve always felt that the Coronado Flower Show marks the beginning of the Summer season in Coronado.  The locals proudly place their home front ribbons in their windows and once the tents come down, it’s only a few short weeks until the Concerts in the Park, 4th of July, and a season of Chamber of Commerce Days!
